Selecting the correct ammo for your AR-15 firearm. Why does it matter?

  • Twist Rate Matters:

The rifling inside an AR-15 barrel, known as the twist rate, dictates how quickly the barrel spins the bullet. A faster twist rate (like 1:7) is better for heavier, longer bullets, while a slower twist rate (like 1:9) is better for lighter bullets.

  • 1:9 Twist Rate:

A 1:9 twist rate is a common twist rate for AR-15 barrels and is suitable for 55-grain to 62-grain bullets.

  • 1:7 Twist Rate:

A 1:7 twist rate is designed to stabilize heavier bullets, such as 75-77 grain bullets, and can also handle 62 grain bullets.

  • 1:12 Twist Rate:

Older AR-15 barrels with a 1:12 twist rate are best suited for lighter bullets, such as 55-grain.

  • Choosing the Right Twist Rate:

If you plan on shooting a variety of bullet weights, a 1:7 twist rate is a good choice because it can handle both lighter and heavier bullets.

  • Don’t Over-Spin:

While a 1:7 twist rate can stabilize lighter bullets, it might over-spin them, potentially leading to reduced accuracy.

  • Consider Your Needs:
Consider what you plan to use your AR-15 for (target shooting, hunting, etc.) and choose the twist rate that best suits your needs.
